2016 Man Booker Prize Finalists Include Deborah Levy and Paul Beatty

The shortlist for the 2016 Man Booker Prize includes Jewish novelist Deborah Levy’s “Hot Milk” and Paul Beatty’s “The Sellout,” a novel that prompted the Forward’s Adam Langer to wonder whether its author might be the new Philip Roth. The other titles to make the shortlist, drawn from the longlist released in July, are Graeme Macrae Burnet’s “His Bloody Project,” Madeleine Thien’s “Do Not Say We Have Nothing,” Ottessa Moshfegh’s “Eileen,” and David Szalay’s “All That Man Is.”
The Man Booker prize, a prestigious British literary prize which has been awarded since 1969, is annually awarded to the best novel written in English and published in the United Kingdom. This is Levy’s second time on the shortlist. Her debut novel, 2012’s “Swimming Home,” was a finalist for the prize in that year. None of the other shortlisted authors have previously been finalists for the prize. The 2016 winner will be announced on October 25th.
