An evening of Yiddish theater in translation

On Thursday, February 17, a new book of Yiddish plays that have been translated into English, will be celebrated both in person and on Zoom at 7 p.m. EST.
Join YIVO for this free event, filled with scenes of romance, political symbolism and low comedy all deftly translated by Yiddish theater scholar Nahma Sandrow, and performed by actors Yelena Shmulenson, Allen Lewis Rickman, Shane Baker and Jakob von Eichel.
The program reflects the variety and range of Yiddish theater repertory, which Sandrow’s new book, “Yiddish Plays for Reading and Performance”, illustrates through three full plays and nine independent scenes, with directors’ notes.
Sandrow will introduce and narrate the program, putting the scenes in the context of Yiddish theater history.
The in-person event, which will take place at the Center for Jewish History at 15 West 16th Street in Manhattan, will be followed by a wine reception. Proof of vaccination is required for entrance to the in-person program and registration must be made in advance. Registration will not be available at the door.
