Every day, it seems, our headlines include shocking incidences of hate speech, antisemitic graffiti, conspiracy theories and assaults on the visibly Orthodox. Journalism has an important role to play in reporting, analyzing, interrogating and debating these phenomena. Rob Eshman will discuss the challenges that journalists – and especially Jewish journalists – face in covering antisemitism. Where are the lines between calling out hatred and platforming it? How do we balance coverage of these threats and stereotypes with those targeting more vulnerable minorities? Why is this happening in the first place — and how scared should Jews be?
Note: Due to family circumstances, Jodi Rudoren will be unable to deliver this year’s Gus and Libby Solomon Lecture. Another leader in the field of Jewish journalism, Rob Eshman, has graciously agreed to take her place. The lecture topic remains unchanged: “Jewish Journalism in a Time of Rising Antisemitism.”
The 18th Annual Gus and Libby Solomon Memorial Lecture is presented by the Harold Schnitzer Family Program in Judaic Studies at Portland State University. Sponsored by Richard B. Solomon and Alyce Flitcraft. Cosponsors include the Jewish Federation of Greater Portland, the Oregon Jewish Community Foundation, Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education, PSU College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and PSU Department of Communication.
