Ben Gurion Airport Workers End Strike
Workers at Ben Gurion Airport in Israel have ended their strike.
The workers, who had started their strike Monday morning, reached an agreement later in the day with the treasury and transportation ministries on workers’ pensions.
Airport workers had gone on strike during one of the busiest weeks of the year after negotiations between the Histadrut labor union and the ministries on safeguarding pension funds broke down.
Departing flights were not allowed to leave from the airport and luggage was not removed from arriving flights, according to reports. Hundreds of Chasidim returning from a pilgrimage to Uman, Ukraine, began singing and dancing on the luggage conveyor belt, causing damage, after they were informed that they could not retrieve their luggage.
More than 29,000 passengers had been expected to travel to and from Israel on Monday.
Originally called for last week, the strike had been called off at the last minute in order to allow travelers to arrive in Israel for Rosh Hashanah.
