Senate Committee Wants More Israel Cooperation
The U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee unanimously approved legislation that would enhance security cooperation with Israel.
The legislation, which was authored by Sens. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) and Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.), and co-sponsored by 62 senators, would reaffirm U.S. policy to reinforce security cooperation with Israel. It was approved Tuesday during a committee business meeting.
In May, the U.S. House of Representatives passed companion legislation that was sponsored by House Majority Leader Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.) and House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.). The legislation passed the House by a bipartisan vote of 411-2.
The American Israel Public Affairs Committee lobbied for both pieces of legislation during its annual policy conference in March.
The legislation is now expected to move to the Senate floor for consideration.
