Americans Are More Sympathetic To Israel Now Than in July
According to the latest national survey by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press, conducted Aug. 9-13. The poll found that 52% of Americans now say they sympathize with Israel in its dispute with the Palestinians, a significant increase from July (44%).
On the question of withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq, the poll found that Republicans are far more divided than Democrats. Twice as many moderate and liberal Republicans as conservative Republicans favor bringing our soldiers home pronto (35% vs. 18%), whereas Democrats are comparatively unified across ideological lines. Sixty-six percent of conservative and moderate Democrats favor troop withdrawals, as do 62% of liberals.
As Jonathan Singer of the blog myDD points out, this morsel of information casts some doubt on the theory that a difference of opinion on Iraq was itself what divided Lieberman and Lamont voters.
