Voters go to the polls today in the fight between Democrat David Weprin and Republican Bob Turner for Anthony Weiner’s old Congressional seat.

Opinion polls show a surprisingly close race between Weprin, considered a safe choice, and Turner, who ran against Weiner before.

Turner closed his campaign with a flurry of TV ads touting his opposition to an Islamic center near the Ground Zero site.

Weprin has enlisted a slew of big-name Democrats in hopes of keeping the seat, which is heavily Democratic and Jewish.

Turner gained traction by seeking to link Weprin, an Orthodox Jew, to President Obama and his perceived soft support for Israel.

GOP leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) called the race a referendum on Obama’s economic policies, which he said failed.

Weiner, who recently moved out of his apartment in the Queens-based district, resigned in disgrace over racy text messages he sent to women.
