Another shooting in America. Another attack at a synagogue. Another day of mourning for the Jewish people and our allies. On Twitter, thinkers, celebrities, and other public figures reflected on the loss of Lori Gilbert-Kaye, the suffering and trauma of the injured and the rest of the survivors, and the question — Where does America go now?
Julian Edelman, New England Patriots player
I’m so sad to be writing about another attack on a Synagogue today on the Shabbat and on the last day of Passover. I’m so sorry for the loss and we are with you San Diego.
I’m sad and angry, but also proud of the strength of our community. You can’t break us. ??

Miz Cracker, drag performer (hey, don’t knock her — she’s a fierce defender of Jews):
Chabad of Poway – Terrible to mark another synagogue shooting. Our thoughts are with you.

Deesha Dyer, civil servant
Thinking this morning of Lori Gilbert Kaye who died shielding her Rabbi in the California synagogue shooting yesterday. Standing firm and strong with people of the Jewish faith. This is tragic and I am sorry.

Professor Deborah Lipstadt, historian
Do not think of the murderers in Charleston, Pittsburgh, Christchurch, San Diego (#Poway) as lone wolves. They are inspired by the same white supremacist antisemitic websites. There are no fine people here and there were none in Charlottesville #antisemitism_here_now

Bette Midler, performer
Just heard about the #SanDiegoShooting. My sorrow is compounded by the escalation of anti-semitism in America, where all are free to practice their religious beliefs. The inertia by social media to curb hate speech on all platforms is outrageous, terrorizing and unacceptable.

Wajahat Ali, public thinker
I know I speak for many when I write that Muslims appreciated the outpouring of love, prayers and support from our Jewish brothers and sisters after the New Zealand mosque shooting. Let us know what our communities can do to help after this latest #Poway synagogue shooting.
— Wajahat Ali (@WajahatAli) April 27, 2019
Arielle Angel, writer
My grandparents spent the rest of their post-Holocaust lives “hiding,” never joining a synagogue, never gathering publicly with other Jews.
These past few months, I’ve begun to see the appeal of disappearing. That hurts me.

Ezra Furman, singer
6 mos after the shooting at Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, I’d like to assert that Jew-hatred is real, & the threat does not come from American Muslims or criticism of Israel’s government. The threat comes from neo-Nazis. Have a clear-eyed, resilient & joyful Passover

Another synagogue shooting this time in Poway California – on Passover! – and six months to the day after the Tree of Life tragedy in Pittsburgh. My heart goes out to them. Meanwhile, we must STOP hate and the means to carry it out. https://t.co/YIbQkwn3t5

Now more than ever, American Jews need independent news they can trust, with reporting driven by truth, not ideology. We serve you, not any ideological agenda.
At a time when other newsrooms are closing or cutting back, the Forward has removed its paywall and invested additional resources to report on the ground from Israel and around the U.S. on the impact of the war, rising antisemitism and polarized discourse.
This is a great time to support independent Jewish journalism you rely on. Make a Passover gift today!
