April 10: Manhattan: The Musical Legacy of Eastern European Jews

Forward archivist Chana Pollack will present archival ads and photos about music to offer a glimpse into how Jewish immigrants settled into America.
Join Forward archivist Chana Pollack on Wednesday, April 10 at 7 p.m. at the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, where she’ll give a lively presentation showcasing the Forverts’ newspaper ephemera. Through archival ads and photos about music, she’ll give a glimpse into how Jewish immigrants were offered a platform for entry into the dream of America.
It all goes back to “From Shtetl to Stage: A Celebration of Yiddish Music and Culture,” which will be performed at Carnegie Hall. After her presentation, Chana will join a panel with Mark Slobin, scholar of East European and American Jewish music, to discuss with musicians Daniel Kahn, Eleanor Reissa, and Lorin Sklamberg what music they will perform in the concert, on Monday, April 15 at 8 p.m. They’ll also delve into the continued influence of Jewish music in today’s musical culture.

We’ve helped five generations of American Jews make sense of the news and the world around them — and we aren’t slowing down any time soon.
