Rabbis 2014

Rabbi Jesse Olitzky

I moved to Jacksonville, Fla., almost two years ago with my fiancée (now my wife). We were in the midst of planning our wedding in Jacksonville and had yet to find a rabbi to marry us. All of the synagogues in Jacksonville required us to become members in order to perform our ceremony. Since we had just moved to town and I was in a temporary position, we didn’t have the money to join a synagogue. Thus we were left without options and felt excluded by the Jewish community in Jacksonville. Rabbi Jesse Olitzky was different. Instead of abiding by his synagogue’s rules and saying no, he fought to change the rules so young Jewish couples (like my wife and I) wouldn’t be left out in the future. In the end, Rabbi Olitzky was able to stand with us under the chuppah after all and perform our ceremony (and did an excellent job). Rabbi Olitzky welcomed us to Jacksonville’s Jewish community in a way no one else was willing to.

Here is why I'm matching up to $36,000 in gifts to the Forward:

Hello, fellow Forward reader! I’m Joel Brown, a Forward reader and supporter for more than 15 years, and currently the chair of the board of directors.

I’m an avid Forward reader because it ticks so many of my essential boxes: excellent journalism, Jewish focus and diverse viewpoints. In today’s political climate, what I most appreciate is the Forward’s independence — made possible by the generosity of its membership.

The Forward is committed to bringing you unbiased, nuanced Jewish news. From my position as board chair, I see an exciting future as we expand our position as the definitive independent voice of contemporary American Judaism.

That’s why I’m paying it Forward, by matching $36,000 of reader gifts. It’s an investment in the Forward’s newsroom, to continue telling the American Jewish story with truth and independence.

Support our mission to tell the Jewish story fully and fairly.
