In Minnesota’s 5th congressional distict, front-runner Keith Ellison holds off three others in the Democratic primary, making it a near certainty that Congress will welcome its first Muslim rep in the coming term.
Here are some other big results:
Rhode Island Senate: Chafee holds off Laffey; with 99% of precincts reporting, Chafee was up 54%, to 46%.
Maryland Senate: Problems at polling stations has delayed the release of official results, but Cardin appears to be in a solid lead. Last night, Cardin’s main opponent and friend Kweisi Mfume, a former rep and NAACP leader, said of Cardin that “he’ll be a damn good senator.”
Maryland 3: John Sarbanes, son the retiring senator, holds a narrow lead over former Baltimore Health Commissioner Peter Beilenson for the seat being vacated by Cardin.
New York 11: David Yassky loses to Yvette Clarke in Brooklyn.
Arizona 8: Conservative former lawmaker Randy Graf, who made fighting illegal immigration a centerpiece of his campaign, prevailed over moderate state Rep. Steve Huffman, 43% to 37%.
Vermont Senate: Bernie Sanders wins the Democratic nomination, though he plans to run as an independent.
Wisconsin 8: Steve Kagen prevails over a crowded Democratic field.
New York Senate: Hillary Clinton rolls over Jonathan Tasini. Apparently no victory party.

You are surely a friend of the Forward if you’re reading this. And so it’s with excitement and awe — of all that the Forward is, was, and will be — that I introduce myself to you as the Forward’s newest editor-in-chief.
And what a time to step into the leadership of this storied Jewish institution! For 129 years, the Forward has shaped and told the American Jewish story. I’m stepping in at an intense time for Jews the world over. We urgently need the Forward’s courageous, unflinching journalism — not only as a source of reliable information, but to provide inspiration, healing and hope.
