Why this page has been removed from our website

Editor’s note: This page has been removed from our website because it did not meet our editorial standards. Published on June 26, 2023, as a jury was considering whether the man who murdered 11 Jews at Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life synagogue deserved the death penalty, it was a tribute to the victims, combining drawings, descriptions and quotations of them that were not properly credited.
We discovered after publication that virtually all of the written material had previously appeared in other places. The main source of the material seems to have been ABC News, with additional items from The American Presidency Project and The New York Times.
Following journalistic best practices, the Forward has a policy not to remove pages from our website. But we made an exception in this case because the nature of the piece and the volume of the uncredited material made it impossible to properly correct the record with integrity. We regret having published it.
Did you know that only 2% of Forward readers donate to support our nonprofit newsroom? That 2% make it possible for millions to read the Forward without a paywall or subscription — removing any barriers to the full and fair Jewish story.
But while the Forward is free to read, it isn’t free to produce. Big stories — like deep dives into the antisemitism data, political scoops or reporting trips to college campuses — take months of research and fact-checking. All while we keep you informed of what you need to know each day.
