Yom HaShoah Commemoration
Members of New York’s Jewish community have joined forces to organize the Lower East Side Yom HaShoah Commemoration, an event taking place at the Bialystoker Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation. The commemoration features a variety of exhibits, including multimedia art by T. Weinstein called The 36 Unknown; photographs from survivors, and work celebrating modern-day life on the Lower East Side. Stories of survivors will be presented in video and written form, and author and survivor Rena Bernstein will speak about her family’s experiences.
The event also includes a candle-lighting memorial. A number of the city’s religious leaders have contributed to the program, including Rabbi Yehuda Blank of the Bialystoker Center, Rabbi Jonathan Glass of the Synagogue for the Arts and Rabbi Yisroel Stone of the Eldridge Street Synagogue.

This is a moment of great uncertainty for the news media, for the Jewish people, and for our sacred democracy. It is a time of confusion and declining trust in public institutions. An era in which we need humans to report facts, conduct investigations that hold power to account, tell stories that matter and share honest discourse on all that divides us.
With no paywall or subscriptions, the Forward is entirely supported by readers like you. Every dollar you give is invested in the future of the Forward — and telling the American Jewish story fully and fairly.
The Forward doesn’t rely on funding from institutions like governments or your local Jewish federation. There are thousands of readers like you who give us $18 or $36 or $100 each month or year.
