Did Bernie Sanders Say Something Very Confusing About The Elections?

Update: Sanders tweeted to clarify his comments on Thursday afternoon.
Here’s the Daily Beast tweet, including Sanders’ most controversial quote:
“I think you know there are a lot of white folks out there who are not necessarily racist who felt uncomfortable for the first time in their lives about whether or not they wanted to vote for an African-American,” Sanders told The Daily Beast https://t.co/q1bu6SmGaz

In that quote, Sanders describes people not wanting to vote for candidates on the basis of race, and calling those voters “not necessarily racist,” a comment that was taken as either naive or racist or both.
