Some come in glorious colors and designs, like this “New Year’s” cake by Stevi Auble, of Hey-there, Cupcake! made for a couple who were getting married on New Year’s Eve and wanted a “Kate Spade” kind of look for their cake.

Sometimes the inspiration for a cake design follows a wedding theme or it mimics some aspect of the ceremony, clothing or reception.Chef Madison Lee wasn’t surprised when a bride asked for a cake that copied her wedding dress. The New York Times has called Chef Ron Ben-Israel “the Manolo Blahnik of wedding cakes.” He once created a cake that matched the interior of the Cipriani 25 Broadway, where the reception took place. This tall, stylish, golden stack went perfectly with the venue’s gold moldings and wooden interiors. Ron Ben-Israel Cakes, (kosher available).

For those who prefer to shy away from wine red or other strong colors but still make a statement, there are soft or pastel colors such as taupe, like this sophisticated cake by Lauren Bohl White, of A White Cake.

Of course, an old-fashioned white cake is still tasteful and classy, especially if something unique – a huge and fabulous ranunculus, for example – graces the cake in place of that plastic bride-and-groom. This one is by Lauen Bohl White of A White Cake.

Don’t want typical round layers? No problem! You can have squares or hexagons or some other shape! Check out this stack of lavender cubes, festooned with flowers, by cake tailor Lauri Ditunno of Cake Alchemy, (kosher available).

Sometimes the couple’s heritage plays a part in the design of the cake, as with this Indian Cushion cake created by Lauri Ditunno.

Sometimes the wedding invitation, a museum masterpiece and even a stunning fashion design can be the inspiration for the cake.When you enter The Butter End Cakery (kosher available) you might think you’ve come to the Louvre. The cakes are like oil paintings, hand-done by Chief Cake Officer Kimberly Bailey, using different pigments and textures of edible “paint.” We liked this one, which took its cues from the couple’s wedding invitation.

An article of clothing – a jacket to be precise – by the fashion house Balmain inspired this bejeweled cake by Nadia Colella at Nadia & Co. Each of those “pearls” is a tiny sphere of sugar attached one-by-one with a tweezer!

Flowers have always been popular for wedding cakes, but these days, elite cake bakers go way beyond buttercream roses spurted out of a pastry tube – take a look at these beauties from Nadia Colella, Nadia & Co.

Not every couple wants a large, multi-tiered cake. Many choose cupcakes instead, or individual portions such as the small mini-cakes covered with hand painted disks by Kimberly Bailey, The Butter End.

Or no cake at all! This is a Croquembouche Tower, created by the World of Chantilly (kosher). There is one cake layer at the bottom but the tower is a tall mound of (parve) custard filled-cream puffs festooned with lovely white frosting gardenias.

Weddings are serious matters, the marriage a lifetime commitment, the reception often costing a small fortune and couples do vow to keep their promises “until death do us part, right?” So occasionally some will want a “fun” unserious cake like this “Corpse” cake by Chef Benny Rivera of City Cakes.

If you’re looking for nostalgia, go for the bride-and-groom topper. But there are other options, such as Cake Alchemy’s cocoa-and-cream-colored square boxes cake with two snuggling love birds on top (they’re chocolate!).
