100 Years Ago in the Forward
The usually sleepy Jewish quarter of Baltimore is in a tizzy after the Forward’s exposure of a racket in the city’s kosher meat industry. Apparently, meat distributors, butchers, rabbis and the heads of the Jewish community were all wrapped up together in a long-term scheme to skim money off the sale of kosher meat. Who suffers in this case? The average Jew and his family. Those who run the Baltimore kosher meat industry had paid off both the butchers and the agudas hakehiles, the organization of Jewish communities, to keep quiet about the their price-fixing schemes. The Forward is advising all Baltimore Jews not to heed the lies of their community leaders, kosher meat industry representatives and butchers.
75 Years Ago in the Forward
The German government has stepped up its anti-Jewish campaign to the level at which it was in the early days of the regime. Nazi leaders have made numerous antisemitic speeches in public, and Jews have been forced to parade down the streets of certain cities while German citizens hurl insults at them. With the near-complete removal of Jews from public life in Germany, Jewish leaders in Berlin have been poring over a plan for the emigration of all Jews from Germany over a period of 25 years. Jewish communal leaders feel that because Germany’s government clearly wants to rid the country of Jews, there is a strong possibility that they will be helped in this matter.
50 Years Ago in the Forward
Gamal Abdel Nasser, President of the United Arab Republic, which currently comprises Egypt and Syria, met in New Dehli with Indian Foreign Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. At a press conference at the close of their talks, Nasser commented that the two had discussed the matter of the State of Israel, and announced that Nehru would soon be visiting the UAR. Fawzi Al-Hunaif, foreign minister of the UAR, was also in attendance and, in an interview in the Hindustan Times, was asked why the UAR consistently refuses to recognize Israel. Hunaif responded: “My answer to this question is always the same: Why doesn’t America recognize China?” It is alleged that the actual reason for Nasser’s trip is to request technical help from India with the Aswan Dam.
